How To Make Chlorine Last Longer In Your Pool

We can’t predict the future, but we are anticipating that we will experience product shortages again this year. It will be important for everyone to do everything that they can to keep their pool clean and clear and make the chlorine they have last longer. There are a few ways to get the most out of your chlorine so you won’t be affected by any possible chlorine shortages this summer.

Buy Early

We receive large shipments of pool chemicals over the winter in preparation for spring. We normally run a Season Supply sale during this time of the year, where we extend discounts from the manufacturer to you when you buy your season supply of chemicals. Unfortunately, because of the chemical shortages, there were no discounts given, and we are not able to offer any to our customers. However, we still strongly recommend purchasing what you need before the season starts to ensure that you have what you need and won’t be scrambling in July for more chlorine pucks.

Enzymes

Enzymes control odors and waterline buildup caused by oils, lotions, greases, and other organic contaminants as they enter your pool. The result is reduced maintenance on filters and pool surfaces saving you time and effort. Enzymes remove contaminants that would otherwise be removed by chlorine. Using Enzyme products will keep your pool cleaner longer, and will make your chlorine work more efficiently by reducing its workload.

Algaecide

If you already use algaecide, great! This is an imperative step to the 3-step system for weekly maintenance. Using a weekly preventative algaecide severely lessens the chance that algae will grow in your pool at all. If there isn’t algae in the pool for the chlorine to kill, your chlorine will last longer. It is a good idea to use a multipurpose algaecide (preventative and killer) that way if you do happen to spot some algae in the pool, you can just add a different dose of the same product.

Clarifier

Clarifiers help chlorine because it grabs floating contaminants in the water to be removed by the filter. If you are sensing a theme, you’re paying attention! The best way to extend the life of the chlorine in your water is to reduce the number of contaminants in the water overall. You don’t want the chlorine to be used up before it has a chance to establish a residual for sanitizing. At work, you delegate jobs so that you don’t become overloaded and burned out. We do the same for the chlorine in your pool and delegate its work to algaecides, enzymes, oxidizers, and clarifiers.

Convert to Salt

If you are looking for a different solution, converting to saltwater / BioGuard Mineral Springs is also an excellent option. Saltwater systems generate a more natural form of chlorine automatically. There are many other benefits to converting to Mineral Springs other than chlorine generation. The water feels silky soft, it has an algae preventative built into the product, and you don’t need to add a weekly maintenance granular shock. This is also a great system for families who travel a lot, because you can bump up the chlorine production and add a double dose of the weekly maintenance product.

Keep your water balanced

Don’t forget to bring in your pool water for a free water test. When your water is out of balance, the chlorine will not work as efficiently. The pH of your water has a direct effect on chlorine efficiency. We will help you keep your pool water balanced and beautifully clear all summer, while helping your chlorine last as long as possible.
