Phosphates are a contaminant that can be introduced to your spa water in many different ways: from soaps and detergents, through your source water, or from other elements in the environment that contain phosphates. When phosphates accumulate in a hot tub they can cause problems with water quality and clarity, and scaling that can cause equipment and surface damage. The risk of scaling and damage to equipment due to high phosphates is especially high with salt systems. If you suspect that your high phosphate level is coming from your source water, bring a sample of the source water as well so we can determine if that is the origin. You may need to add phosphate remover to your weekly chemical maintenance.

Treating for phosphates will temporarily cloud the water, so make sure you add it when you aren’t planning on using the hot tub and have some water clarifier on hand. It’s also a good idea to chemically clean your filters (just rinsing won’t be enough for this) before and after phosphate removal for the quickest results.
